We study how PFAS are released, distributed and circulated in the Antarctic environment, especially under melting and climate change conditions.

How PFAS spread throughout the Antarctic environment

During the austral summer, when Antarctic snow and ice melt, the thaw releases PFAS that had been trapped for years or even decades. This reintroduces them into the Southern Ocean, where they can circulate once again.

This process increases contaminant concentrations and disperses them across the ocean surface, especially near coastal areas. The effect may be more noticeable at the sea surface, a very thin layer where many substances and microscopic organisms concentrate.

This research area studies how PFAS concentrations in water change, how they are distributed across space and time, and how climate change is intensifying this process.

Environmental biologist from the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) and PhD in Marine Sciences from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and the University of Barcelona (UB), specialized in the biogeochemistry and environmental fate of persistent and emerging organic pollutants (POPs) in polar environments. 

He has led several scientific projects funded by the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID) and the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACh). He is currently a researcher at the Center for Genomics, Ecology and Environment (GEMA) at Universidad Mayor (UMayor) and an associate scholar at Florida International University (FIU, United States).

Karla pozo

A researcher and lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering at Universidad San Sebastián (USS), where she leads the Microplastics and Persistent Organic Pollutants Laboratory.

She has an established research line with 15 years of experience in the field of Environmental Chemistry, evaluating persistent organic pollutants and the impact of plastic and microplastic pollution in aquatic and terrestrial environments. She has investigated both the accumulation patterns of these pollutants in the environment and their potential ecotoxicological effects on biodiversity.

Deniz bozkurt

Doctor of Earth System Sciences from Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ). His research focuses on regional climate modelling, extreme events, and atmosphere–cryosphere processes in Antarctica and South America.

He has led projects funded by the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID) focused on extreme temperature and precipitation events, climate variability and change, and the dynamics of atmospheric circulation and their impacts on the surface cryosphere in polar and austral regions. He is currently an academic in the Department of Meteorology at the University of Valparaíso and a researcher at the Center for Climate and Resilience Science (CR2) and the COPAS Coastal Center at the University of Concepción (UdeC).
